How to use messaging

The messaging feature allows you to securely chat with other users on our platform. Use it to ask questions about items, make offers, and get advice from other buyers and sellers.

Access your messages

To access your existing messages, complete the following steps.

Mobile Desktop

1. Open the OfferUp app and log in to your account.
2. On the home_icon.svg Home page, tap inbox_icon.svg Inbox.
3. View your available message threads.

Send a message

There are many ways to send a message, depending on what you’re trying to do. Here’s how to start messaging with other users.

Ask a question

If you’re interested in an item, but have questions before you buy, you can send the seller a message using the Ask feature.

Mobile Desktop

1. Open the OfferUp app and log in to your account.
2. On the home_icon.svg Home page, tap on a listing you’re interested in from the feed.
3. On the listing page, tap Ask.
4. In the New Message field, type a message or select a suggested message, then tap Send.

Make an offer

If you’re ready to buy an item, you can make the seller an offer by sending a message using the Make Offer feature.

Mobile Desktop

1. Open the OfferUp app and log in to your account.
2. On the home_icon.svg Home page, tap on a listing you're interested in from the feed.
3. On the listing page, tap Make Offer.
4. Enter your offer price, then tap Make Offer to send it to the seller.

Start a new chat

If you want to chat with someone, but not about a specific item, you can send them a chat request from your inbox or from their profile page. Please note, this feature is only available in our mobile app.

  1. Open the OfferUp app and log in to your account.
  2. On the home_icon.svg Home page, tap inbox_icon.svg Inbox.
  3. Tap Start a New Chat.
  4. On the New Chat pop-up, choose who you want to chat with from the following options::
  5. Tap on a user to open a new thread, then type your message into the New Message field.
  6. Tap Send to finish.

The user must accept your chat request before you can start a conversation. 

Accept a new chat request

If a user sends you a new chat request, you must accept it before you can respond to them. Please note, this feature is only available in our mobile app.

  1. Open the OfferUp app and log in to your account.
  2. On the home_icon.svg Home page, tap inbox_icon.svg Inbox.
  3. At the top of your Inbox, tap Requests.
  4. Tap on a new chat request, then select from the following options:

Once you accept a user’s chat request, you’ll receive push notifications every time you get a new message from them. Learn more about push notifications.

Reply to a message

To reply to a message, complete the following steps.

Mobile Desktop
  1. Open the OfferUp app and log in to your account.
  2. On the home_icon.svg Home page, tap inbox_icon.svg Inbox.
  3. Tap the message thread you want to reply to. 
  4. On the Message page, tap into the Message field and type in your response.
    Note: To react to a message with an emoji, tap the Smiley Face
  5. Tap Send to finish.

Delete a message

To delete a message thread, complete the following steps. Deleted messages cannot be recovered.

Mobile Desktop
  1. Open the OfferUp app and log in to your account.
  2. On the home_icon.svg Home page, tap inbox_icon.svg Inbox.
  3. Locate the message thread you want to delete.
  4. Long press or swipe left on the message thread, then tap Delete.
