How to block and unblock users

We want you to have a great experience working with other OfferUp users. But if someone is sending you rude, harassing, or threatening messages on our platform, we recommend that you block them. Blocking a user prevents them from contacting you and from buying your items.

Blocking a user

There are two ways to block a user on OfferUp.

NOTE

Blocking someone is not a permanent action, so if you change your mind, you can always unblock them.

 

Block a user in messages Report and block a user

You can block a user you're chatting with directly from your message thread.

To block a user in messages:
  1. Open the OfferUp app and log in to your account.
  2. On the Home page, tap Inbox.
  3. In your Inbox, select the message thread with the user you want to block.
  4. On the Message page, tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
  5. In the pop-up menu, select Block.
  6. Confirm by tapping Block again in the Block User pop-up.

NOTE

This feature is only available in the mobile app experience.

When you block a user, the following things happen:
  • All past messages with the blocked user are removed from your inbox.
  • The blocked user can no longer send you new messages.
  • The blocked user can no longer purchase your items.
  • The blocked user is not notified that you blocked them.

REMINDER

We do all we can to protect you, but we also rely on your help. Never exchange personal information with other users, as this can put you at risk. If you experience harassment, report and block the user immediately.

Unblocking a user

There are two ways to unblock a user.

Unblock in your account settings Unblock from a profile page

To unblock a user from your account settings:

  1. Open the OfferUp app and log in to your account.
  2. On the Home page, tap your profile picture in the top-right corner.
  3. On the Account page, tap Account Settings.
  4. In Account Settings, scroll down to Privacy > Blocked Users, then tap Edit.
  5. Find the user's name on the Blocked Users page and tap Unblock.

NOTE

This feature is only available in the mobile app experience.

When you unblock a user, the following things happen:
  • Your messages with the user from the past 3 months are returned to your inbox.
  • The user can send you new messages.
  • The user can purchase your items.
  • The blocked user is not notified that you unblocked them.
