Want to be a successful seller on OfferUp? Below are some tips and a few easy things you can do to really stand out.
Build a trustworthy profile
Your profile helps buyers get a sense of who they're buying from. A complete, credible profile can give buyers more confidence before they reach out. Here’s what you can do:
- Add a clear, recognizable profile photo.
- Verify your email and phone number to earn badges.
- Apply for TruYou verification.
- Turn on notifications so you don't miss messages from buyers.
Start with a strong listing
Take the time to create a detailed and descriptive listing. Including plenty of photos, a clear title, an accurate description, and a fair price gives buyers the information they need to feel confident about your item.
Transparency is key. If your item has defects or is showing its age, make sure to include that in the description and photos.

Respond to buyers quickly and professionally
Try to respond to interested buyers in a timely manner. Your average response time and response rate appear on your profile, so staying responsive reflects well on you as a seller.
It might be tempting to ignore low-price offers, but it's always a good idea to respond. A polite counteroffer keeps the conversation going and shows buyers you're easy to work with.

Confirm the details before you meet
Once you and the buyer have agreed on a price, confirm the logistics before meeting up. Sorting out the details in advance helps everything go smoothly. Here’s what you can do:
- Agree on a specific time and location.
- Discuss payment method ahead of time. All transactions on OfferUp take place in person — cash is recommended. Avoid gift cards, personal checks, or wire transfers.
- For large or heavy items, clarify upfront who is responsible for transportation and whether loading help is needed.
- If plans change, notify the buyer as early as possible.
Meet safely
Safety comes first. We strongly recommend meeting in a well-lit, public location. Here are a few additional tips:
- Bring a trusted friend or let someone know where you’re going and who you’re meeting.
- For high-value items, choose a meetup spot with security cameras.
- Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, it’s okay to cancel.
Note
If the item is large, and you are unable to transport it yourself, consider meeting with the buyer first. Then, if you feel comfortable, you can share the item's exact location for easy pickup.
Complete the sale the right way
Taking care of the details at the end of a transaction reflects well on you as a seller. When completing the sale:
- Give the buyer time to inspect the item before accepting payment.
- Mark the listing as Sold immediately after the exchange — leaving sold items active can waste other buyers’ time.
- Rate the buyer once the transaction is complete. It's a good way to build trust within the OfferUp community.
- If a sale falls through, don't worry — there are always more buyers.

Keep your listings fresh
Keeping your listings up to date helps ensure buyers are seeing accurate, current information. Be sure to:
- Check in on older listings regularly. If something isn’t selling, try updating the photos or description before dropping the price.
- Archive seasonal items when demand is low and reactivate them when the timing is right.
- Archive or mark any items that are no longer available as Sold. Stale listings can create a poor experience for buyers.
- Use Promotions to get more visibility for your listing.
