Tips for working with service providers

Hiring a service provider for your home project? This article offers practical tips to help you choose the right professional and ensure a safe, positive experience from start to finish.

Communicate through the app

For your security and convenience, always message providers through OfferUp (or Thumbtack, if applicable). This keeps your personal details private while allowing you to discuss project needs and ask questions. Once you're ready to book, you can share your contact information (email, phone number, address) directly in the chat. Just avoid sharing sensitive details like your Social Security number or bank account information.

Note

If you're booking via the Thumbtack portal, our partner will securely collect the necessary information to match you with the right provider.

Research a provider in advance

Before booking a provider, take time to review their OfferUp profile, reputation, and Google reviews. If available, check their website and ask for photos of past work to assess quality and style. It's also a good idea to compare pricing with competitors and confirm that the provider holds the necessary licenses for the job. These steps will help you feel confident in your decision.

Decide on payment terms

Before any work begins, establish clear payment terms to ensure a smooth process. Agree on the total price and when payments are due. If you're setting up a payment plan, clearly outline each due date to avoid any confusion, or explore the option of spacing out payments as project milestones are completed. If a down payment is required, make sure it's for a reasonable amount. Finally, confirm the provider has a secure way to accept your payments.

Ask for a written contract

To protect yourself, it’s good to secure a written contract before any work begins. This contract should outline the scope of work, pricing, milestones, materials, and any other important project details. A contract can protect you from surprise fees or charges, and in the unlikely event that the provider doesn’t perform the work promised. Make sure you both sign the contract to ensure each party understands and agrees to the terms.

Keep your family safe

To protect your family when a provider is working in or around your home, take a few simple precautions. Keep children and pets away from active work areas, and ask the provider to maintain a tidy, debris-free environment. Share any specific house rules, like keeping doors and gates closed to prevent pets from escaping. Also, clarify which areas of your home the provider is allowed to access while working.

Trust your gut

If you don’t feel good about a provider, trust your instincts. There are many qualified pros to choose from, so take your time and choose one that makes you feel completely comfortable.
