When buying on OfferUp, you’ll pay in cash for local items and through OfferUp payments for shipped items.
Pay in person
If you're meeting a local seller, bring cash. This is the safest payment option. Try to bring exact change so you don’t have to worry about breaking large bills.
When you meet, examine the item carefully. If you like it, hand over the cash. It’s that easy! To learn more about in-person meetups, see our Safety tips.
Note
Refunds are not accepted for in-person transactions. For more information on what can be refunded, see How buyers request a refund.
Pay via the OfferUp app or website
For shipped items, you'll pay securely through the OfferUp app or OfferUp website. This keeps your payment information private. Here’s how it works.
- Add a credit or debit card to your account as your payment method.
- When a seller accepts your offer, the payment is authorized (but not charged).
- When you receive the item, you have 2 days to inspect it.
- If you’re satisfied, do nothing— payment will be released to the seller at the end of the 2 days.
- If you’re unsatisfied, request a refund within the 2 days.

The following payment methods are accepted on our platform:
- American Express

Avoid scams!
Never pay for shipped items outside of the OfferUp platform. This is a common tactic to defraud buyers. For more information, see Common buying and selling scams.
