When you make transactions through OfferUp’s electronic payment system, you may be asked to validate certain personal data.
Our payment processor, Stripe, uses the information you provide to programmatically verify your identity. This is required by regulators and financial partners in order to promote transparency and prevent fraud and financial crimes.
Stipe requests only information that’s required to continue providing payments and for tax reporting capabilities.
Depending on the transaction volume, Stripe may be required to request sellers to provide personal information. This information may include name, date of birth, physical and billing address, last 4 digits, or full Social Security number. If the Social Security number cannot be provided or validated, they may request a scan of your government ID (like a driver’s license). Additionally, the debit card or bank account is required to provide a funds disbursement (See: Get paid after shipping).
Once your data is confirmed, you can start accepting payments immediately. Know that your personal data is never used within OfferUp and is only passed to Stripe and kept confidential within their database. Learn more about how they collect and safeguard your personal data in Stripe’s Privacy Policy.
We take privacy and security very seriously. OfferUp does not keep any of the personal data you provide to Stripe, and Stripe information will never be disclosed to other buyers or sellers on OfferUp. Please only submit this personal data through OfferUp’s secure app or website. To learn more about how your personal data is transferred, read Collection of Information #4 in OfferUp’s Privacy Policy. For security reasons, we do not accept copies of IDs over email.
